On Jessica Kleczka’s IG page yesterday, she had a poster titled “There is a role for everyone in the climate movement.” It then offers visual images of different roles you a person might take on. It is a limited list, with only 20 suggestions that could fit in the image. Take a look:
I love this list because it reminds me that taking action as people of faith, what I call discipleship, doesn’t have to just be the ‘big’ things we might think of, like protesting like Greta Thunberg, or moving to the country and going off the grid (and of course such private action, even if you are wealthy enough to be able to do so, is insufficient without political change. Jesus taught us that, as well as the reality of the climate emergency itself).
So this Friday’s Nudge is the following call to action.
Call to Action: Decide on Your Role in the Climate Movement Today
As the list above illustrates, there is a wide range of roles that one can take on in response to the climate emergency. Are you called to protest, or are you called to make flags? Are you called to offer first aid, or open your home and make tea for those who need support and encouragement in our time of climate anxiety?
Of course, we are never called to do just one thing; there is much that we can and are called to do, depending upon the contexts of time, place, and privilege, as well as our own gifts and skills. Today’s call to action is simple: what is one thing that you can do, what is one role that you can adopt today? Drop a comment here:
That role can be discipleship in action.
