Hey! I’m Jessica, and welcome to my newsletter about faith and climate action. We are in a climate emergency; it’s all hands on deck... Subscribe to join a community of people of faith and like-minded people seeking to make change!
Friends, I don’t have an essay or sermon for you today, as I am dealing with a health issue; it’s a sick day for me. I will have something new for you next week.
In the meantime, I want to offer you a brief Friday Nudge. Wildfires have started early and strong here in Canada, thanks to the climate emergency. A few days ago, residents from various neighbourhoods in Fort McMurray, Alberta had to evacuate due to the encroaching out-of-control blaze.
This is the second time residents have been asked to evacuate; in 2016, a devastating wildfire destroyed 2400 homes in the city. Miraculously, no one died as a result of the fire, but the scene was truly apocalyptic.
I can only imagine how retraumatizing it must be for residents, firefighters, and others connected with Fort McMurray to be at risk again. Such trauma and retraumatization are happening around the world, due to fires, flooding, storms, and more. Thus, your Friday Nudge is to pray for people suffering in Fort McMurray and worldwide as they fear for their safety and the safety of the people they love.
Information on the current fire near Fort McMurray is here.
Want to know more about the 2106 Fort McMurray fire, or about how wildfires are worse now thanks to climate change? Read Fire Weather: The Making of a Beast by John Vaillant. It is a fantastic read about both topics.
Have you read Fire Weather? What did you think of the book?
