What is Faith. Climate Crisis. Action.?

Faith. Climate Crisis. Action. is a twice-weekly newsletter offering encouragement, challenge and inspiration to people of faith who are concerned about the climate emergency. Writing for people of faith, worship leaders, and anyone else who cares about having the perspective of faith at the table of climate action, the newsletter includes:

  • Short overviews of issues surrounding the climate emergency and other aspects of the ecological crisis

  • Theological reflection and sermons on these issues, relating them to the Christian faith tradition and the call to respond as people of faith

  • Book recommendations, calls to action, subscriber contributions, pictures from across the Earth community, and more!

Who am I?

My name is Jessica Hetherington. I am an ecotheologian and ordained minister. I live in the Ottawa River Watershed, in Ottawa, Ontario on unceded and unsurrendered Algonquin territory. I have a passion for discipleship in response to the climate emergency and ecological crisis.

Ecotheologian: One trained to look at and respond to the ecological crisis through the lens of faith.

Discipleship: A response to the call of God; it is faith lived out in our actions.

I hold a PhD in Christian Ethics, focusing on how people of faith can change their behaviour in response to the ecological crisis. I have been studying issues surrounding Christianity, behaviour change and ecology for 20 years.

I am also an ordained minister in the United Church of Canada and have been in ministry for 10 years. These two formations give me both the academic and pastoral training to help people transform their lives and actions in response to the climate emergency and ecological crisis.

Don’t Just Listen to Me…

Here is what some people have had to say after hearing me preach, speak, or reading my words:

“Rev. Dr. Jessica Hetherington is a modern-day prophet and a born teacher. Her expansive knowledge of Christianity and the environment shows us not only where we are, but how we can move forward in faith and hope.  Jessica is extremely approachable and a delight. Her faith shines through her deep passion for this beautiful world of ours, and her enthusiasm is contagious.”

“Jessica… takes the seriousness of the climate crisis, an issue that overwhelms many into a state of hopelessness, and reminds us that the God of our tradition is present with us now and calling each of us to take action as a part of a new unfolding mission. A mission that is fueled by love and joy…the kind of love and joy that is naturally felt when we engage Creation.”

“To hear Rev. Jessica preach is to feel empowered and enlightened. If you are looking for a feminist-forward, no-nonsense approach to social and ecological justice, the Rev. Dr. is your launching place and your soft place to land.”
