I can't get excited about these international conferences anymore. They are not working and we are running out of time. We need more honesty and less emphasis on hope IMO. Can we find ways to pull together and carry on, even though things are crumbling all around us? We have no choice but to try.
We need revolution and transformation. They will never happen at a COP meeting. What I found most impactful there was what was happening at the grassroots. The presence of Indigenous Peoples and local communities was powerful. As a person of faith, I have been finding inspiration in the historical examples of Dorothy Day, Dietrich Bonhoeffer and Martin Luther King, Jr., and current examples of Roger Hallam, who is currently serving 5 years in a UK prison for participating in a meeting about nonviolent climate action (https://rogerhallam.com/about/), and Rev. Sue Parfitt, an Episcopal priest who has had her right to preside over worship denied because she's been arrested for nonviolent climate action (https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2024/sep/21/retired-priest-painful-treatment-church-climate-protests).
